When we first moved up to Alaska we decided that we were going to take a trip to Hawaii at the end of the season to reward ourselves, and our skin, for surviving an Alaskan winter. We were both Hawaii virgins at the time. Well, the 2010-2011 season ended and our skins did not get the chance to see actual sunshine. Two hockey seasons later, we finally got our opportunity when we traveled to Kaua'i, Hawaii for our friends' wedding. Safe to say it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been - quiet, relaxing and gorgeous! Possibly part of the reason it's called "the Garden Island".
We were in love even before we stepped off the plane and onto the red soil. Flying in we both agreed it looked like something out of Jurassica park (we later found it was actually filmed there). We knew it was going to be an amazing vacation even before we walked out of the airport - While we were waiting for our bags a local looked at Steve's wrist and said, "Why are you wearing a watch? Take it off. You're on island time now." And so he did. I love island time.
It was a week filled with good friends, plenty of laughs, fun in the sun, splashing in the surf, snorkelling and a tropical drink, or two. Can't forget those. Oh and lots of chickens, because I'm pretty sure they out number the people.
I took over 1500 during the course of the week, so as I lay on the couch, listening to the Hawaiian station on Pandora Radio, I will leave you with a few from the first day and a half. Stay tuned for more...
If you ever go to Kauai, stop at the Fish Express in Lihue for some fresh spicy ahi tuna pokey (picture #2). Amazing! It's quite possible we got mercury poisoning from the amount of tuna we ate that week. Another food recommendation is Puka Dogs in Poipu - a special Hawaiian hotdog and must try! They add their own garlic sauce (spicy or not), Hawaiian mustard and speciality relishes (from banana to mango to pineapple). If you're feeling thirsty after your dog, grab a nice Maui Brewing Co Big Swell IPA (picture #7). My mouth is watering just thinking about this.
